Sweet Marjoram Plant
Sweet marjoram is a fragrant culinary herb with soft green leaves and a delicate, slightly sweet flavor similar to oregano—but milder and less spicy. Its warm, comforting aroma makes it a lovely addition to kitchen gardens, patios, windowsills, and herb planters.
Common Uses
Use fresh or dried marjoram to season soups, sauces, roasted vegetables, potatoes, chicken, sausage, eggs, and homemade salad dressings. It can also be added to herb bundles, simmer pots, wreaths, and other fragrant crafts.
Growing Outdoors
- Place in full sun, ideally receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
- Plant in loose, well-draining soil after the danger of frost has passed.
- Allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again.
- Avoid soggy soil, which can damage the roots.
- Space plants approximately 8–12 inches apart.
- Pinch the growing tips regularly to encourage a fuller, bushier plant.
- Sweet marjoram is sensitive to cold and is generally grown as an annual in Florida, although established plants may continue growing during mild weather.
Growing Indoors
- Place near a bright, sunny window that receives at least 6 hours of light.
- If natural light is limited, grow it beneath a grow light.
- Keep it in a container with drainage holes and well-draining potting soil.
- Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain completely.
- Keep the plant away from cold drafts and air-conditioning vents.
- Trim and harvest regularly to keep the plant compact and encourage new growth.
Harvesting
Snip individual leaves or cut stems just above a set of leaves. Harvesting regularly encourages the plant to branch and produce more tender growth. For the strongest flavor, harvest before the plant begins flowering.
Plant appearance and size may vary naturally. Each plant is locally grown with care by Wild Fern Apothecary.
